Cover Songs (2009)

These short pieces were made by layering edited recordings of feedback created by plugging the output of a mixing board back into its own input. David Tudor pioneered this technique of "no-input" feedback in the early 1970's and took it to levels of sophistication far beyond what is represented here. Performing with electronic feedback is a bit of a highwire act; you never know what is going to happen or what (if any) effect a turning a knob or flipping a switch might have. I'm not sure why I decided that these would work as cover songs; I suppose I thought the juxtaposition of the abrasive quality of the feedback with the thought of these overtly appealing songs (all of which I like very much) would be amusing.
